Key Lifts Johnson Over Lyndon 75-73

JOHNSON, Vt. (February 8, 2011) -  Senior Rob Key (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) sank a 10-foot turnaround jumper as time expired to lift Johnson State to a 75-73 North Atlantic Conference basketball victory on Tuesday night in Carter Gym.  Lyndon freshman Phil Warrick (Springfield, Mass.) drilled a 3-pointer with :08.6 seconds left to tie the game before Key's heroics lifted the Badgers to win and a 6-14 overall record, 3-7 NAC.  Lyndon slips to 8-13 overall, 7-3 NAC.

 

After several lead changes during the first 20 minutes the team entered halftime with the score knotted at 35-35.  Warrick led all scorers with 16 points on 6-9 shooting while his rookie counterpart for Johnson Billy Boyd (Hardwick, Vt./Hazen) paced Johnson with 10 points on 5-6 shooting.

 

The game with sway back-and-forth throughout the second 20 minutes until back-to-back 3-point field goals from JSC senior Ian Passino (Peru, N.Y./Peru) gave Johnson the 73-70 lead with :33 seconds left to play.

 

Lyndon would get four attempts at the game-tying shot as the Hornets chased down long rebound after long rebound until Warrick drilled the equalizer from the left wing and set the stage for Key.

 

Sophomore point guard Andy Bousono (Philadelphia, Penn./Nueva Esperanza) dribbled up the left side of the floor, found a flashing Key who drove the right side, bobbled, spun, and rose up over Lyndon's Logan Calkins (Danville, Vt./Danville) and dropped home the jumper as the buzzer sounded sending the large Carter Gym crowd into a frenzy.

 

Bousono was a terror throughout for Johnson State finishing with a game-high 23 points, six assists, and three steals on 8-14 shooting including a trio of 3-point field goals.  Boyd ended the game with 14 points and five rebounds, Passino hit three 3-pointers en route to 13 points, and junior Alen Turan (Essex, Vt./Essex) had an outstanding showing scoring nine points, grabbing a team-high six rebounds, handing out six assists, and collecting five steals.

 

Warrick matched Bousono's 23 points while junior Ben Sackett (Lyndonville, Vt.) canned 4-of-8 3-pointers on his way to 14 points, and freshman D.J. Santos (Milton, Mass.) scored 10.

 

Johnson will now travel to Maine for a pair of games this weekend at Thomas College on Friday and at the University of Maine-Farmington on Saturday at 6:00 pm and 2:00 pm respectively.
