JOHNSON, Vt. - Johnson State College freshman guard Asim Khan (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) (pictured) has been named North Atlantic Conference men's basketball Rookie of the Week. This is the second time Khan has been recognized with the honor this season.
Khan, a health science major, averaged 12.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per contest while shooting 46% (10-22) from the field, 43% (3-7) from the 3-point line, and 93% (14-15) from the free throw stripe. Khan and Badgers experienced a 1-2 week, all NAC contests, are now stand at 6-8 overall, 4-4 in the NAC.
Due to an ankle injury to senior point guard Andy Bousono (Philadelphia, Penn./Nueva Esperanza) Khan moved from the 2-guard to the point guard this week. Khan answered the call with a 14-point performance on the road in a 72-68 win at Green Mountain on Tuesday. Khan went 10-for-10 from the free throw line in that game inlcuding a 6-for-6 effort in the closing minute.
The slashing, ultra-quick rookie followed up that performance with a career-high 23 points on 8-for-15 shoointg in a 67-59 loss at Maine Maritime on Friday. Khan was held scoreless at first-place Husson on Saturday to complete the week.
For the season Khan, who has started in all 14 games this year, is averaging 11.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per outing while shooting 47% from the floor and 82% from the free throw line.
Johnson State and Khan will take to the hardwood again on Thursday when they travel to in-state foe Castleton State College for a 7:30 pm tip.
