STOWE, Vt.- Former Johnson State College men's golf student-athlete Nick Murphy came out on top as the day 1 leader on Tuesday afternoon at the 2020 Vermont Amateur Championship with a score of 65.
The 114th Vermont Amateur Championship is hosted by the Stowe Country Club in Stowe, VT. This is a 72-hole stroke play event open to all Vermont amateurs. Four local qualifiers will determine the Championship field for those players who are not exempt into the 2020 Championship. The field is cut after 36 holes to the lowest 40 scores and ties who advance to the final day of championship play. The final day is 36 holes.
Murphy had the round of his life as he shot 7 under on the day. Murphy's first-round total is the tournament's lowest score in relation to par in at least a decade.
Murphy started strong earning a two under advantage after the first four holes. Murphy continued to be impressive as he three-putted for par at the downhill, par-5 sixth hole. His first bogey came on hole number seven. Murphy stayed consistent until the 14thhole when he earned eagle from 30 feet.
"I visualized going under par, for sure. I do meditations. I knew it was possible," said Murphy, a Rocky Ridge member whose previous best round this year was a 73. "I just didn't let a bad shot enter my head." Burlington Free Press (7/8/2020)
A native of Lyndonville, Vt. and a student-athlete at Lyndon Institute, Murphy attended Johnson State College throughout the 2015-16' year and was a member of the 2015 Johnson State College golf team.
