Canton Holds Off Johnson 59-57
Junior Andrea Deuell tallied a game-high 17 points in the Badgers 59-57 non-conference loss to SUNY Canton at home on Friday night
JOHNSON, Vt. (January 7, 2011) - In a tightly contested game throughout the SUNY Canton Kangaroos snatched a 59-57 non-conference win over host Johnson State College on Friday night in Carter gym. The win lifts Canton to 2-7 overall, 0-0 Sunrise Conference while the Badgers drop to 4-6 overall, 0-0 North Atlantic Conference.
The game would seesaw back and forth throughout the first 15 minutes of the contest and see it's forth tie of the night at 16-16 after JSC's Molly Grover (Cumberland, Maine/Cheverus) knocked down a corner 3-pointer. Canton would close the first half on a 10-4 surge behind the hot shooting of Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Saint Lawrence Central) who would finish the first half with 10 points on 4-5 shooting.
Johnson would hang around, chip away, and finally snare the lead with 11:34 remaining when sophomore Lauren Lepage (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) collected a steal and took it in for a lay up to take the lead at 38-37. Lepage would then knock down back-to-back 3-point field goals for a personal 8-0 run and give Johnson the largest lead for either team on the night at 44-37 with 10:09 left to play.
The 'Roos would respond with a 12-2 spurt over the next five minutes to regain the 49-46 lead. Canton would nudge ahead by as many as five points in the final minutes but a jumper by sophomore Jen Ferrari (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) made the score 56-55 with 1:16 left in the game.
Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) would sink 3-of-6 free throws in the closing minutes to help preserve the victory despite a Johnson offensive rebound off a free throw with :09 left to play but they could not convert the ensuing field goal attempt.
Maynard would finish with a game-high 22 points for Canton while Shoen and Shannon Lafave (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) each added 10 points.
Johnson junior Andrea Deuell (Milton, Vt./Milton) tossed in team-high 17 points, grabbed six boards, and collected four steals while Ferrari scored 15 points.
Johnson will open North Atlantic Conference play in their next contest on Friday, January 14 when they travel to Castine, Maine to play the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy at 6:00 pm while SUNY Canton moves on to play the University of Maine-Fort Kent on Monday at 12:00 pm, their Sunrise Conference opener, at Clarkson University.
