JOHNSON, Vt. (October 27, 2010) - The #4 seed Johnson State College defeated the #5 seed Green Mountain College in the First Round of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's soccer playoffs on Wednesday at Minaert Field by the score of 2-0. The Badgers (9-6, 3-4 NAC) move on to the NAC Semifinals where they will meet the #1 seed Castleton State College on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Green Mountain ends their season at 4-10-1, 2-4-1 NAC.
Johnson State would create numerous scoring chances over the first 20 minutes of play and break through at the 23:08 mark when freshman Kelsie Perdue (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) lofted the Badgers seventh corner kick of the half into the box where sophomore Ally Bataille (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood) was able to redirect it into the net past GMC keeper Karen Davidson (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) for the 1-0 Johnson lead. The score would remain at 1-0 until halftime.
Green Mountain would game momentum over the first 10 minutes of the second half but could not crack the Johnson defense and goalkeeper Jes Gertsch (East Haven, Conn./East Haven). The Badgers would regain the field position advantage and found the insurance goal they were searching for with 7:49 left to play when senior Emily Hassard (Montpelier, Vt./Spaulding) chipped a ball over the Green Mountain defense to a streaking Ally Fortier (Scituate, R.I./Scituate) who then lofted a similar looking ball over the head of Davidson for the 2-0 margin and eventual final.
Gertsch made four saves to earn the shutout victory for Johnson while Davidson did all she could to keep her team in it making 11 saves, several in highlight fashion.
Johnson would outshoot Green Mountain 26-8 for the day while also holding a 15-8 edge in corner kicks.
