JOHNSON, VT – Vermont State University Johnson Women's Volleyball faced VTSU Castleton and VTSU Lyndon on day two of the VT Classic. The Badgers took a win from Lyndon while succumbing to a five-set loss delivered by Castleton. The first match of the day saw Johnson face Castleton, where they took the opening set 25-20. First-year, Jennifer Longway, set the tone for the set with a game-opening kill, supported by an additional seven from Max Ludlow. Johnson would drop the following two sets in matching 17-25 fashion, before rebounding in the fourth (25-19) as a dominating 1-8 run saw them cruised into a game-deciding fifth. The set to 15 was marked by constant back-and-forth efforts, with both teams trading the lead until Castleton evened the score at 11 apiece. After a three-score run by Castleton, Johnson scored to survive another match point, before ultimately falling with a valiant 15-12 effort.
Ludlow and Natalie Medina led the team with double digit points, collecting 17 and 11, respectively. Setter, Delany Gross marked a game-high 22 assists, while Ludlow and Villa topped the Badgers kills at 14 and 9.
The team bounced back with a 3-0 victory against VTSU Lyndon, which saw the Badgers effectively spread their efforts. While Johnson's opening set began strong with 5-0 and 4-0 runs that brought the score to 11-3, it was a dominating 10-0 stretch, with Longway serving, that closed the door on the set. The pause in momentum between sets was beneficial to Lyndon, as they followed with a 4-3 lead, challenging Johnson's recent trajectory. The Badgers seemed to reset, scoring four consecutive points to not surrender the lead for the remainder of the match. The final two sets (25-15, 25-12) were highlighted by the next longest run that the Badgers saw in their favor, led by Longway serving.
Ludlow and Medina again led the program in points, both with 15. Longway notched a season-high 9 aces for the team.
The Badgers next take the court at Colby Sawyer, Wednesday at 6 pm.
